1. Appearance
Purple or purplish-red cubic octahedral crystals, easily forming into large-grained crystals.
2.Physical and Chemical Properties
It has a relative density of 1.826 (25°C) and a melting point of 89°C. When heated to 100°C, it loses 10 water molecules of crystallization, and upon heating to 400°C, it loses all 12 water molecules to form the anhydrous compound. It is highly soluble in water and dilute acids but insoluble in alcohol. The aqueous solution appears purple-red, turning green when heated to 70°C, and gradually reverting to purple upon cooling. The compound is hygroscopic and prone to efflorescence in dry air.
3. Application
It is employed as a leather tanning agent, dye mordant, photographic fixing agent, and other purposes.
